TheStar.com talked to Margie on her recent trip to Kuala Lumpur. Margie, talked about her writing, and the end of writing the Beautiful Creatures novels. You can read an excerpt below, but for the entire thing, CLICK HERE.
Fantasy, she feels, is a way of exploring dangerous and powerful emotions and topics. “When you’re writing about supernatural powers you’re writing about emotional power.”
Stohl has just finished the revision for the final book of the Caster series, which will be published in October next year. The book, she says, is so closely connected to the third book that they are almost two halves of one book. And the stakes are very, very high for Lena and Ethan.
“The feeling of writing the last book is like a cross between a funeral, a wedding and a graduation. When I finished writing the draft I cried and when Kami finished writing her part of the draft she cried, and when the editor finished reading it she cried. It’s just so emotional to finally have this world closing,” she says.
After she closes the chapter on the Caster series, Stohl will be working on the Icon series alone without Garcia, which she admits is a scary endeavour.
“Not so much about the writing but about having to leave a successful franchise. It’s scary. What if the readers do not come? What if it doesn’t become an NYT bestseller?” she muses.
While Stohl says there’s a possibility of revisiting Gatlin once more, especially since there’s a movie coming out, she would like to focus on the Icon series now.
“Right now I think it’s important for both Kami and me to explore our own voices. We are going to do that, but we’ll always be friends and the possibility will always remain. I will never say never,” she says with a laugh.
What book can’t you wait to read in 2012? Well, even though we will be sad to see it end, we have to agree with the great folks over at Hollywood Crush put out their list of books to read in 2012, and the yet Untitled 4th Beautiful Creatures book has made the list.
Here’s what they had to say:
8. “Caster Chronicles No. 4″ by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl (Fall 2012) How will it all end for Lena and Ethan? Yeah, we have no idea either.
We have been getting an influx of emails asking us about what is going on with the casting of the movie adaptation of Beautiful Creatures. And would we like to give you answers? Of course we would; if we had them.
For now, we will refer you to some news articles about it:
Aines Realm … One thing I love about these books are the characters: Amma, Macon, Ridley, the aunts, Marian… The list keeps going. It’s impossible not to love than all. Except the baddies, of course. And the setting is amazing. I’m not from the south, but I’m close enough that I’ve been to the area where the fictional Gatlin would be if it existed. It’s a beautiful area. But the gothic twist with secrets and interesting history weaves everything together so beautifully.
Hippies Beauty and Books Oh My … As for the ending, there is a major, major cliffhanger. It nearly devastated be and I’m pretty sure I felt my heart crack in two pieces. Why Kami and Margaret? WHY!!? I suggest keeping a box of tissues close at hand for this one! I most definitely recommend reading this book. I loved how it took on a darker, edgy atmosphere and dived a little bit deeper into this world the authors created. Just be prepared for all of the doom and gloom, and if you are, you’re going to fall in love with Beautiful Chaos!
Reading Vacation … The story is told through Ethan’s eyes. After being emotionally separated, Ethan and Lena have grown to depend upon and trust each other. Lena has matured and is no longer whiney and needy. They have learned from what they have been through. Theirs is a relationship that feels right. It feels secure. After finishing this third book in the series, I feel even more invested in the characters and the town of Gatlin. A rich history has been building and I truly care what happens. I am looking forward to the final chapter, especially after the stunner of an “OMG NOW WHAT?” ending to
Imaginary Reads … As the synopsis indicates and I have hinted, the ending isn’t going to be optimal, not at all. It is going to have your heart crying, and your book-loving soul anticipating the fourth installment. The Caster Chronicles is definitely a series that will continue to attract the more mature readers who want to see more depth to a plot.
Dark Readers … Beautiful Chaos ties up so many un-answered questions especially regarding Sarafine. This novel is about love, friendship and sacrificing all you have for the people that matter.
Have to say that we love the way that this review is delivered. I am telling you, CasJayTuck, you won us over! Email us your address to castergirls@gmail.com, we have something to send you!
