Regina Spektor is my recommendation for today. If you have not heard of her I suggest you go out right now and buy her album Begin to Hope. I love love love Regina Spektor her voice is amazing and her songs are so quirky and fun yet deep and dark. If you would like an example of that listen to That Time on her Begin to Hope CD and you will understand what I mean.
I was lucky enough to actually see her perform live and she is amazing! She has this presence on stage that is intoxicating! She makes you want to sing along with her. Anyways hopefully you will enjoy her as much as I do. She has a new album out called Far which is amazing as well. But if you are a newbie to Regina I would recommend Begin to Hope.
So apparently I am horrible at putting up videos on youtube. I thought that I put it up six hours ago, but apparently that never happened– I am SO SORRY for the delay.
I just finished Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson and all I have to say is that book really impacted me deeply. There were points in that book that I had to put it down because I could not read anymore, I was so disturbed by what Lia and Cassie were doing to themselves.
Now I am not blind to the fact that this happens to a lot of girls all the time but to actually get such a raw account of what happens and what these girls go through it really made me so sad to know what is truly happening.
This book brought back a memory from my eight grade year that I haven't thought about in ages. I remember being in my science class with my friend who sat behind me. We were typical kids laughing and talking during class, singing smashing pumpkin songs and just having as much fun as you can in a science class. One day I remember turning around and I see my friend slashing her wrist with a bobby pin, and what I saw was a bunch of scratches up and down her arms. I was shocked! I didn't know what she was doing and I was confused. I asked her why she was doing that and she responded by saying that it felt good. She told me to try it and I did and all I felt was pain! I gave her the bobby pin back, told her she was weird, she told me I was weird, we giggled and moved on.
Thinking back on that I realize that I missed such a huge call for help! But I didn't know what that was I had no idea what cutting was! I always feel like some girls fall to these behaviors to cope with bigger issues and I am terrified because I have younger cousins and friends and I only hope that they know that there are people out there who can help. I hope that if anyone is going through this knows that there is help out there and people will listen. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
Wintergirls really made me think and I enjoy books like that. I sometimes forget about other peoples problems because I am so consumed with my own but sometimes you have to reach out to someone who is in a deeper hole than you are. Just look around someone is always calling for help. Don't miss the signs. Thank you Laurie Halse Anderson for such a great book that really brings to focus what girls go through now a days.
When
my parents decided to redecorate the front lawn, they wanted to add in
flowers. I somehow got it into my head that it would be a great idea to
plant carrots. So we went to the gardening store one April day, and
while my parents picked out daisies and perennials, I agonized over
which kind of carrot seeds would grow best in the pot I had chosen for
them. (They would have gone in the ground had that space not already
been spoken for!). After deciding on a type called "kurodas", we went
home and planted them in a long pot alongside some edamame bean seeds
and another pot with strawberry plants. About a week after planting, I
started seeing little green leaves. And then they grew into full blown,
leafy carrot tops. Now, in June, I have… the first carrot! (Shown
here with the lovely little gardening hat I bought at Target yesterday.)
Though it's come out crooked because of the pot, I consider it a great
success. I mean, how often do you get to not only watch your food grow,
but then pull it out yourself? It all adds to the enjoyment! If you get
the chance, I think you should definitely try growing some kind of
food. There was a great selection of seeds at the gardening center, from
lettuce for salads to pumpkins (start planting soon for Halloween!) and
watermelons. Trust me, it takes almost no gardening ability and, for
most varieties, just a little space. And what better season to spend
time outside in a garden than during the summer? In just a month or
two, you could have a tasty little snack!
