The Story Siren interviewed Kami and Margie. You can read an excerpt of their interview below, but for the entire thing, CLICK HERE.
You have the third novel under your belt now. How has your writing process changed? I’m sure you’ve found things that have worked for you and certain habits. So, what didn’t work for you? What’d you get rid of? And what do you still do now that you did before and all that good stuff?
Kami Garcia: Strangely enough, it actually hasn’t changed, because I think since we came upon our writing process kind of accidentally and it worked for us, it’s kind of like you don’t fix what isn’t broken. We’re scared to mess with it now. We continue to outline together and then pass chapters back and forth and write over each other’s work.
But, I think that the main thing that has just changed is probably how hard both of us are on the words, whether it’s our words or the other person’s words. I think we’ve learned so much from the editing process with our editor, Julie Scheina, that now we are harsher editors ourselves. I just find that when I’m sending Margie things and when she’s sending me things, they feel a lot cleaner, although let’s be clear that they’re obviously nowhere as clean as they are when you see them in the bookstore. They still need help.
Margaret Stohl: We wrote the first book in 2008 and published it in 2009. My oldest daughter, who dared us to write the book, is going off to college in the fall. My middle daughter, who stayed home with us to edit them, is, going into her junior year and sort of can’t be bothered. My youngest daughter, who was probably five at the time, is 10, and her friends are reading the books.
Kami Garcia: And my daughter just turned four. And we came up with the idea for the book at a restaurant that we love. And she was three months old in my lap while we were writing on napkins.

Kami recently did an interview with Romantic Times on her upcoming Hollywood Projects. You can read an excerpt of the interview below, but for the entire thing, CLICK HERE.
You’ve got two projects in the works with Hollywood right now — what’s an aspect of (or moment from) these series that you can’t wait to see on the big screen?
In Beautiful Creatures, there’s a scene where Ethan finds Lena one night in the rain. It’s incredibly visual (and romantic). I would love to see that one on screen. I can’t say much about Unbreakable at this point, but there is a scene between Kennedy and Jared that involves a tight space — and a lot of heat. There is also something unique about Jared and Lukas in Unbreakable, and it will be interesting to see how that translates on screen.
Page Turners Blog recently conducted an interview with Kami and Margie. You can read an excerpt below, but for the entire thing, HERE.
Stacey: All right. I have a two-part question to get my last two questions in. Are the gardening shears Link’s new, like, weapon of choice? I love that he has–he started off in Beautiful Dark with them, and then now he carried through into Dream Dark. And he’s cracking me up with the garden shears. And then also, what’s your favorite international cover you’ve seen so far?
Kami Garcia: I think the shears are definitely going to be a reoccurring theme. I equate the shears now to Indiana Jones’s whip. They’re Link’s Indy whip. How could he be without them?
Margaret Stohl: I think that he got them from failing bio. If he wasn’t in bio summer school, he wouldn’t have had those.
Kami Garcia: Right. So there is something to be said for having to take summer school.
Margaret Stohl: I think those shears are important. That’s Link’s mortality. It kind of prevails in his own mortal clod clumsiness. I love Link.

There are no ARC’s for Chaos, we have come to terms with the fact, that we will be waiting until October to read what happens next. However, selected reviewers were sent Chaos, and Bibliopunkk was one of those reviewers.
Let’s revisit the synopsis of Chaos.
“Ethan Wate thought he was getting used to the strange, impossible events happening in Gatlin, his small Southern town. But now that Ethan and Lena have returned home, strange and impossible have taken on new meanings. Swarms of locusts, record-breaking heat, and devastating storms ravage Gatlin as Ethan and Lena struggle to understand the impact of Lena’s Claiming. Even Lena’s family of powerful Supernaturals is affected – and their abilities begin to dangerously misfire. As time passes, one question becomes clear: What – or who – will need to be sacrificed to save Gatlin?”
It leaves you wondering, what could happen? What is next? Are Ethan and Lena going to be together? Will they be happy? What else could happen?
Bibliopunkk review made us crave Chaos even more. It sounds like this book is amazing.
What Garcia and Stohl do in this book is nothing short of masterful. There’s always been a magic to their work (no pun intended).. a crispness and a quality that is barely rivaled in the Young Adult market. But, in this book, they have defeated their biggest rivals…themselves. It’s so hard as writers to keep readers’ attentions (and affections) running for several books in a series. Plots start to dwindle, character arcs become dull or tedious, and readers slip into ennui, become apathetic. Not so with this book. The main crux of this story will have readers gasping with anticipation until the final page.
I loved this. I devoured it. It’s the book in the series that is most centered on the relationships and how the relationships between the characters in the small town of Gatlin can be tested and tampered with and broken. It is the book that is most about the characters within and their interactions. It’s the book that most beautifully underscores what relationships mean between loved ones, and what some sacrifices are truly worth. I was crying at the end of this book… it’s pretty damned poignant.
We can’t wait for Beautiful Chaos, and this review only makes us want to read it more. It’s no surprise to us that this book is “masterful.” Garcia and Stohl consistently raise the bar as only they can do.
Margie had been hinting for a while that Kami had a secret. Turns out, that late Saturday night, we found out that Kami did indeed have a secret, and it was a good one.
You remember previously, we had told you that Margie was writing her own series, Icons. Saturday night we were all given the news, Kami has one too.
Publishers Weekly made the announcement that Kami had sold ”Unbreakable” and “Unbound” the first two books in The Legion series to Little Brown. The first book, Unbreakable, is due out Fall 2013.
The exciting news that came with that. The movie for Unbreakable is already in development, with none other then Twilight and Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief producer, Mark Morgan.
For more on Unbreakable, visit Kami’s Official Blog. You can also read more about it over on Hollywood Crush.
Congrats Kami and Margie on your solo deals. We can’t wait.
* Kami clarified that the draft was finished this spring, not the script. The script will be forthcoming.
