Macon is Gatlin’s boogeyman. He’s also an old-fashioned Southern gentleman with a penchant for cigars and controversy, not necessarily in that order. He’s a man with secrets. And talents…

From Boy With Books Interview:

BoyWithBooks:
Macon’s storyline is…surprising. What motivated that arc?
Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl: You can give the reader what they want, or what they need. After you read BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, we think our choice will be obvious.

BwB: Where did the idea for Macon’s “special nature” come about?
K & M: We wanted to define the supernaturals in our universe our own terms. Macon’s “kind” exist is certain types of mythology, but we didn’t define them in the traditional way. We created our own parameters for their nature and capabilities. We think Macon’s gifts, in particular, are both frightening and compelling.

BwB: He’s also kind of a badass.
K & M: If you consider who he is and the choices he’s made, we don’t think he could be anything other than a badass. But he is a gentlemanly badass, don’t you think? He’s the Atticus Finch of badasses.
BwB: [Definitely a gentleman first and foremost. Kind of like, please, sit. Would you like some tea before I destroy the world? What self-respecting Southerner would be anything else?]
