The Director of Step Up Revolution Congratulates Kami and Margie!
Movie Fanatic caught up with the bestselling pair for an exclusive interview to take us through the process of turning their four-part book series into a cinematic experience. Authors have described the process of having their novels turned into films with varying levels of joy. Garcia and Stohl have nothing but bliss when recalling how their vision came to life on the silver screen.
“We were very lucky and it was very stress free, compared to stories we’ve heard. For us, the stress is what are we going to wear to the premiere and will our makeup be done right,” Garcia said and laughed.
Stohl believes that the fantastic experience begins and ends with the film’s director, Richard LaGravenese.
“Richard was a kindred spirit early on,” Stohl said. “The thing we cared about the most is not one detail of the universe, it’s about profound respect we have for teenagers… which he shares. He also was an awkward teen. He has a teen. We’ve all been through this together. He’s a writer. He loves words.”
Garcia felt LaGravenese saw a kindred spirit in the film’s lead character, Ethan. “He was a little bit awkward — but, also loved books. He had some things in common with Ethan,” Garcia said. “He found between the casting and costume designer and art director, he put together this A-list, incredible group of people that weren’t necessarily household names, but they are incredibly respected in their field. It’s like he put together the perfect dinner party.”
Stohl reported that she and Garcia always write their teen characters as true as possible, thus possibly explaining their extraordinary success with Beautiful Creatures.

If you’re looking for a run-of-the-mill movie review then you’ve come to the wrong place. I’ve read the series, I was fortunate enough to be invited to the movie set and I was even able to see the movie in advance. Here’s a list of reasons why “Beautiful Creatures” is a must-see.
1. This guy:
Meet Richard LaGravanese. The director. The commander in chief, if you will. In addition to directing “Beautiful Creatures”, Richard also wrote the script. But more importantly, he is a fan. He’s just like us! It goes without saying that when the people participating in the making of a film are actually fans, it shows. And Richard is no exception. He loves Ethan and Lena just like we do and it shows in his work.
2. This guy, too:
I know what most of you are thinking. Hear me out. I’ll be honest, I didn’t have much of an opinion one way or the other when Alden Ehrenreich was cast as our hero, Ethan Wate. While the rest of the fandom were moaning and groaning, I wasn’t really giving it any thought. But it didn’t take much convincing to sell me on Alden. In June, 2012, I took a little trip to New Orleans to watch “Beautiful Creatures” being filmed. Alden was in the middle of a scene when I walked on set. He didn’t even have any lines in the scene and I turned to my co-blogger and said “THAT’S ETHAN WATE!” Guys, he was eating a banana. That’s all it took for me. And now that I’ve seen the movie I am comfortable shouting from the rooftops (posting on this blog) that Alden Ehrenreich was the right choice for this role.
3. Jeremy Mother Lovin’ Irons and Viola Freaking Davis.
Need I say more? Honestly.
4. Alice Englert.
One thing in particular that stood out to me about Alice Englert’s performance as Lena Duchannes was that in every scene, YOU feel what Lena feels. In particular, after Lena is being harassed by classmates (*cough* Zoey Deutch *cough*), she comes home and argues with Macon. My heart hurt for her so much in this scene. She was relatable. She was every one of us when we were teenagers.
5. The entire supporting cast.
New faces and old. Rookies and veterans. The “Beautiful Creatures” cast has it all. They deliver some stellar performances. Between Civil War flashbacks, Caster holidays and even some good old fashioned kissing in the rain, this movie appeals to the masses and has a little something for everyone. So whether your girlfriend wants romance this Valentine’s Day or you boyfriend wants to see some Dark Magic, this movie is for you.
