Jackson Pearce Interview & Sisters Red Giveaway

I loved Sisters Red and when Jackson agreed to do an interview with Caster Girls I was so excited! So in honor of Sisters Red we decided to do a giveaway as well as an interview. Below is the interview and all the details in order to win one of three signed Sisters Red books.
CG: Why did you decide to do a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood?
JP: Little Red Riding Hood is one of those fairytales with layers—it is chock full of symbolism, interesting characters, and creative plot elements. It seemed ripe for a retelling to me because all of those layers could transform into something new and original while still reflecting the heart of the original fairytale.
CG: Scarlett and Rosie March are two strong female characters in the book, what message are you trying to send your female readers?
JP: While I definitely didn’t sit down and think “I’m going to send a message!”, I do hope readers get something beyond the story out of the book. I hope that Rosie sends a message about the importance of defining yourself, instead of letting yourself be defined by others. I hope Scarlett sends the message that fulfillment comes in many forms, and the most-traveled-path isn’t necessarily for everyone.
CG: In Sisters Red there is a lot of action, what kind of research did you do to make it sound so authentic?
JP: I have always been a fan of “fight” scenes in movies—not necessarily martial arts movies, which involve incredibly stylized methods, but rather good old fashioned FIGHT scenes. I love Buffy, for example, loved the fight scenes in Kill Bill, that sort of thing, where a woman uses everything at her disposal to beat an opponent who often is larger or stronger than she is. I don’t know that I’d call watching those research, exactly, but they were definitely inspiring.
CG: How was Sisters Red different from As You Wish in terms of writing?
JP: SISTERS RED is obviously a book for a slightly more mature audience—there’s more violence, romance, and it’s a more thematically complex book, in my opinion. I was very worried that readers of AS YOU WISH would reject it for that reason, but I wanted to stay true to the story at all costs.
CG: Is there any music that inspired Sisters Red?
JP: I’m one of those people that usually writes in total silence, though there were two songs that I played on repeat for HOURS (literally). One was “Sister” by Dave Matthews Band, and the other was The Special Two by Missy Higgins. I thought both really captured the book’s spirit, as campy as that sounds! I played them in the background while filming the SISTERS RED trailer to help the girls playing Scarlett and Rosie get into character, and they worked wonders.
CG: What’s next?
JP: Next is SWEETLY, a companion book to SISTERS RED (not a direct sequel). Here’s the blurb!
Twelve years ago, Gretchen, her twin sister, and her brother went looking for a witch in the forest. They found something. Maybe it was a witch, maybe a monster, they aren’t sure—they were running too fast to tell. Either way, Gretchen’s twin sister was never seen again.
Years later, after being thrown out of their house, Gretchen and Ansel find themselves in Live Oak, South Carolina, a place on the verge of becoming a ghost town. They move in with Sophia Kelly, a young and beautiful chocolatier owner who opens not only her home, but her heart to Gretchen and Ansel.
Yet the witch isn’t gone—it’s here, lurking in the forests of Live Oak, preying on Live Oak girls every year after Sophia Kelly’s infamous chocolate festival. Alongside Samuel Reynolds, a boy as quick with a gun as he is with a sarcastic remark, Gretchen is determined to stop running from witches in the forest, and start fighting back. But as Gretchen digs deeper into the mystery of not only what the witch is, but how it chooses its victims, she finds herself wondering who the real monster is, and if love can be as deadly as it is beautiful.
Here is what Kami and Margie had to say about Sisters Red:
“Darkly powerful and razor-sharp, Jackson Pearce’s voice cuts like an ax.”
We have three signed copies of Sisters Red to giveaway. All you have to do is become fans of the Caster Girls and Jackson Pearce on Facebook and leave a comment on this post.
Thank you Jackson for participating.
